Reprints?!

recreations Posted by Hello

-->the purpose of this assignment was to, best to our abilities, replicate a page from a magazine of our choosing in InDesign for jour 450. from headline of the article to the page number of the magazine.

i, of course, chose wizard--the comics magazine (since that was what i had lying around in my room) and as always, i gave it my all but unfortunately i couldn't find the same spider-man picture online so i left a blank spot.

can you guess which one is my doing and which is the original?

the one on the left is replicated page while the page on the right is the original, as if you didn't already know though!

Headlines, Sub-Heads Big Difference!!!

Sub-Heads Posted by Hello

-->sub-heads are spaces in-between the title and the first line of a story. sub-heads give small informations that relate to the article or remarks the author of the story puts in that might help pique a reader's interest in the article. and the author's name (and if the author is generous enough) will share this space with the photographer to put in his/her name as well.

the space isn't all that big, so it should be used wisely (or change the font size?!).

Monthly Scheduled Columns

Regular Columns Posted by Hello

-->the bars above the regular indicates what size the fonts will be for each corresponding layout on the article as well as how much space to give to the area designated for where those fonts are in.

as you can see, there's a gutter line of the article like the cover story and that will usually be the case with regular columns.

Beneath the Cover (Story that is!)

Cover Story's Interior Posted by Hello

-->inside the cover story there can be no less or more than 2 photos (unless its a nice spread photo) and one must dominate the other.

each page of the article may or may not have some sort of visible gutter line, mainly depends whether or not it'll be a beneficial look of a design for the article's layout. As for the bottom of the article there'll be an indicator (small enough that it won't throw the reader's attention away from the article) of the title of the article as well as page number and the issue of urbanize the reader is reading.

Designing Cover of Cover Story

Cover Story's Guide Posted by Hello

-->the cover to the cover story is usually pretty easy to design because its mainly pictures, title, author, text...ok, maybe not that easy.

each cover story of urbanize, the photo will always be of a person because the articles will always be about people or creators relevant to the urban and pop culture scene of today. there can be no more than 1 large picture or 3 pictures and the pictures can only take up a page and a quarter of the next page only.

the fonts of the cover stories' titles will never dominate the photo or its page because the articles is what interests the readers. also the title will never be lined vertically because that'll be a hard read...somewhat.

Style Guide::Urbanize's

Cover Posted by Hello

-->(my friend just reminded me that i forgot the descriptions for this and the other ones above it. heh, oops.)

so anyways, this is the cover to the magazine urbanize's style guide.

basically a style guide, from what i've learned, set-ups the style of what you in your magazine (or newspaper) each month, meaning this booklet lays out the foundation for each issue of a magainze or another weekly or monthly publication with special instructions for certain issues like anniversary issues.

the cover's figure is, of course, another michael lau figure. i chose his back because well, urbanize has this attitude about it, not arrogance but implying this is how our generation is.

Hip Hop Summit of '04

Flier Posted by Hello

--> this isn't the original design of the flier, this is actually a redone version (which i never turned into my 322 class. waste huh?).

the original had more of stencil lettering and bigger. my intention was never to redo it to you all the truth and now looking at it...i agree with my first design. maybe i'll go back to it later and redo it (again!).

i got the information for this up in sf's asianweek newsletter/paper; this flier was for the hip hop summit 3 over in la, free food and all, if you can read the e-mail address then go e-mail the person for next year's or something up to you.

back to the design, i chose bright colors (contrast to the whole hip hop culture) because this flier's main goal was to attract passer-by's attention. for them to go check it out, if they're were in la or something. the weird shapes actually started out as being stars and strips but with a retro 70s look to it (another reason for the colors i chose to use) but realized it was looking right so i started trying the effects and filters in illustrator; bending and twisting and other crazy tools. when i came to this look of the flier i got a festive feely sense in me, which is what i wanted because summits can be fun plus it sounded fun so i stuck with it but changes can still be made with this though...and i'm thinking about it.

Wizard Cover (mock-up) Posted by Hello

--> this cover was done in spring of '04, my first class that was related to my major.

the intention of this assignment was to have us, the students, exhibit what we learned in photoshop. the work isn't all that great but then i was just learning so....

Squared?!

1st Urbanize Ad Posted by Hello

--> this is one michael lau's newest figures from his "garderners" series (or is it the "crazy children" series?).

i used it as one of my advertisements up in the urbanize magazine. asked a friend of mine if we needed one (because i wasn't paying attention, as usual...).

the overall design of the ad was to basically try to use up every ounce of white space possible but at the same time not have it be crowded; reasoning behind the white background! everyone "awe!" with me now--AWEEE!!! plus the design is simple and gets the message across to consumers.

basically the ad reveals everything that a consumer would need to know about this figure:
-what--is it?
-why--should i care?
-how--is it important to me?
-where--can i get one? and...
-how--can i get one?

Urbanize--the Hush-Hush Magazine

Cover to the Urbanize Magazine Posted by Hello

--> urbanize magazine was a project for my jour. 450 class in fall of '04. the assignment was to redesign our school newspaper, the [x]press, or make-up an entirely new one and of course i would choose the harder one to do!!!

basically, urbanize is a magazine for people in their teens to late 20s or so and is somewhat of a universal magazine because it [would have] shown what are the most popular or trendy things going on around the world; us, parts of asia, parts of europe and etc. from dining to technology.

but a bit of a heads up, this issue is mainly pointed to the guys (since a guy created this!) so sorry ladies. and again this a made-up magazine, doesn't exist (yet).

Urbanize--Under Con[tent]

Urbanize's ToC Posted by Hello

--> this would be urbanize's table of contents or as i would like to call it "under con[tent]".

the idea behind this table of content design or the grid background is because i was thinking that a table of contents is basically a layout for readers to see what will be inside a book, magazine even a newspaper.

each of the headlines in either medium gives you an idea of or a clue what that chapter will be talking about or the article will be about. and with a magazine and newspaper (not sure about this) there's also a little description of what that article is about.

there's also the regular or monthly columns as well as pictures to show readers, in case they don't know who the articles or headlines are talking about, a peek of that person being interviewed or merchandise that's good or isn't all that.

so all-in-all a table of contents really is a layout for the readers to see what's ahead for them.

Urbanize--Cover Story

Cover Story Posted by Hello

--> ok, i'll admit it! i'm crazy about the whole urban vinyl figures (those of you who know these two knows what i'm chattering about!)!

first off, this feud thing/article i'm talking about isn't real (at least, i don't think it is) between them. secondly these are the pioneers of the whole urban vinyl craze and third, i said urbanize talks about the latest trends going on around the world (even though i'm not that much of a trendy person myself) and urban vinyl is still the craze in HK. to learnd more about these guys, their work as well as where to buy their figures...on this blog somewhere, too lazy to retype (even to copy and paste) so you can do the looking yourself.

Urbanize--Regulars: Game of the Month

Game of the Month Posted by Hello

--> keep in mind this project was last year's so i'm not sure how popular halo 2 is still for this new year!

but basically with urbanize's monthly repetitive columns, the intention was to keep it simple but not to the point where the reader will get tired of seeing it page after page let alone month after month. this design's intention is to display the simplicity i'm looking for and with each page flip the design would be the same but the design's colors would be different from the last. and the colors should be blinding the reader, so no bright-sun yellow or burning-your-retina red just toned down colors, well a bit toned down.

Sticker Project (final product)

Demon Boy stickers

--> the "demon boy" stickers were a part of my project for my summer class back in '04. find an artist we (the students) like and then mimic the artist's style.

in my case i have to artist which look upon as greats (but being humble as they are...). one is superstar comic book artist jim lee (batman, x-men, wildcats (1st series), etc.) and the other would be michael lau. i chose michael lau because lee's is a style full of detail while lau's is, as you can see, simplistic making it easier to mimick. plus only had a week to design, sketch, do prototypes, print-out and then present to the class so...yeah.

lau is a hk-based toy designer who introduced the whole urban vinyl toy. you can go here, http://www.michaellau-art.com/, to check out some of his work and where it can be seen.

and you can go here, http://kidrobot.com, to purchase figures he designed along with other urban vinyl designers' figures.

Sticker Project (mock-up)

Bully King

--> this is one of the sketches and final mock-up for the sticker project. with this one i chose a different artist but also, like michael lau's style, simple.

the artist in question is none other than eric so, another hk-based toy-designer. it can be said that he was another founding member of the whole urban vinyl scene, but more silent.

you can go to http://ericsoart.com/ to grab more info about so as well as check out his gallery. you can also go to http://kidrobot.com to buy some of his work.

1st Commerical (even if it is for a school project)

1st Tequiello Commerical/Storyboard

--> tequiello was a product that my group members developed for our group project in my Fall 2004 marketing 434 class. tequiello is a combination of a tequilla drink and jello, or better known as jello shots. anyone who's been to clubs know what these are. what our group decide on was having pre-packaged jello shots being sold in supermarkets or wholesalers for clubs as well as parties at home. my job was to develop a series of commericals that would run to help promote our product. this would be our first commerical (of 4 commericals) to run on air.
